The largest e-commerce platform in Latin America, MercadoLibre, has announced that Bitcoin and cryptocurrency trading are now available to its users in Chile.
With the company’s MercadoPago wallet app, Chilean customers will be able to purchase, sell, and store Bitcoin. According to a statement made by Osvaldo Gimenez, President of MercadoLibre, this makes MercadoPago the first digital account in the country to offer this type of service.
According to the announcement, the move aims to remove barriers to using Bitcoin and cryptocurrency in Chile. This feature is meant to make using Bitcoin easier for those with less experience. It is anticipated that the process will be “very simple” and will require low operating costs so that even inexperienced users can enter the market for the first time.
Gimenez said in the statement:
We continue to open the doors of the #crypto world for millions of users in the region: first Brazil and Mexico, and now also #MercadoPago users in Chile can buy, sell and save #Bitcoin.
In November 2021, MercadoLibre first made the service available in Brazil which happened after the company purchased $7.8 million worth of Bitcoin in May 2021.
