On Bitcoin’s 16th anniversary, infrastructure company Blockstream introduced the Jade Plus wallet, a hardware solution for self-custody designed to meet the needs of Bitcoin users at all experience levels.

The launch coincides with Bitcoin Genesis Day, commemorating the mining of the asset’s first block on January 3rd, 2009, and comes amid growing interest in self-custody options as the hardware wallet market expands.

Features and Enhancements

The Jade Plus wallet builds on Blockstream’s original Jade model, first released in 2021, with updates including the ESP32-S3 chipset for improved performance, a refined display, and enhanced tactile navigation.

Security features include:

  • Genuine Check to verify device authenticity.
  • Blind Oracle Technology to counter private key extraction attempts.
  • Secure Boot and Anti-Exfil to prevent unauthorized software execution and protect private keys.

The device supports air-gapped operations for offline transaction signing and firmware updates via USB-C connectivity and a built-in battery. Durability has been improved with reinforced materials, making it suitable for long-term asset security.

Compatibility and Accessibility

The Jade Plus integrates with popular Bitcoin wallets like Sparrow and BlueWallet, offering users flexibility in managing funds. It caters to a broad audience, from beginners to advanced users.

The original Jade model remains available as a more affordable entry-level option, providing users with choices based on their needs.

The Jade Plus launch follows increased scrutiny of centralized exchanges (CEX) and custodial services due to security vulnerabilities and transparency issues.

Self-custody solutions like the Jade Plus align with a growing trend of users seeking greater control over their digital assets.

By focusing on open-source technology and user-controlled solutions, Blockstream aims to address persistent security challenges in the Bitcoin custody sector.
