Decentralizing development of Bitcoin requires more developers around the world. It also requires consensus compatible node implementations that are well-maintained and security hardened.

Across the Bitcoin node operator and developer community, there is a growing conversation about the reference implementation's development process, touching on questions of prioritization, change management, and code quality, both historically and going forward. As the world's most critical software project, Bitcoin must eliminate single points of failure through decentralization. Relying on one dominant implementation creates centralization risks and vulnerability. Bitcoin would gain resilience from multiple well-maintained implementations with broad developer and user support.

Today, ProductionReady Inc. announced its launch to advance open-source Bitcoin development through education and a new conservative Bitcoin client. The nonprofit will fund education and protocol development with the goal of launching a broadly adopted and well maintained implementation that prioritizes stability, security, and fidelity to the principles that have made Bitcoin sound money.

The ProductionReady board of directors includes Samson Mow, Jimmy Song, Parker Lewis, and John W. Ratcliff, each of whom is a long-time Bitcoin advocate committed to keeping Bitcoin decentralized. Jimmy Song, one of Bitcoin's earliest and most respected instructors, will lead the nonprofit's developer education initiatives.

Bitcoin needs a conservative implementation to enhance network resilience and act as a check on changes across implementations. For multiple implementations to thrive with widespread support, they require differentiated processes. ProductionReady will support a truly meritocratic approach, grounded in a clear vision of Bitcoin as money, and treating protocol developers, application builders, businesses, miners, and individual node runners as core stakeholders to achieve stable long-term outcomes.

"As Bitcoin matures and the value stored on the network grows into the trillions, it becomes increasingly important to follow a conservative development path that can eventually lead to ossification," said Samson Mow, Director at ProductionReady. "Having multiple well-maintained Bitcoin clients with significant adoption will bring greater balance to the ecosystem, ensuring that no single implementation can dictate the direction of development."

Early conversations with prospective donors and developers have signaled strong enthusiasm for this initiative. To translate that momentum into action, ProductionReady is formally launching this effort and opening the floor for public dialogue, enabling stakeholders to voice their interest, and creating a direct channel for community feedback.

ProductionReady will contribute funding towards the development of a Bitcoin node implementation, built on Bitcoin Core, with the goal of complementing the existing ecosystem by prioritizing conservatism and strengthening Bitcoin's monetary properties. This effort is predicated on broad support by both Bitcoin developers and users. ProductionReady has already secured a combination of donations and commitments from several individuals and organizations. These donations come with no strings attached, ensuring full independence.

Through early conversations with interested developers, the board anticipates that any implementation it supports would restore the OP_RETURN data limit to its previous default. Regarding BIP-110, given the lack of broad user consensus at this stage, it is not expected to be included, though all considerations remain open as the effort evolves.

"A conservative implementation isn't just a technical preference — it's a statement that Bitcoin belongs to its users," said Jimmy Song, Director at ProductionReady. "We're excited to begin this work and invite developers and supporters to join us on the ground floor."

ProductionReady invites developers to contribute to its open-source initiatives and welcomes financial support to expand its work. As a U.S. 501(c)(3), all donations to ProductionReady are tax-deductible and directly support Bitcoin education, research, and development.
