Umakawatei, a multipurpose community venue on Sado Island in Japan’s Niigata Prefecture, introduced Bitcoin Lightning payments during a demonstration on August 17th.

Organizers described the installation as the island’s first Lightning payment system and part of an initiative to turn Sado into a “Lightning Island” supporting everyday Bitcoin transactions.

The Lightning Network processes transactions separately from Bitcoin’s main blockchain before settlement, allowing payments to be completed more quickly and at a lower cost. It is commonly used for small purchases.

Umakawatei occupies a historic building that has served as a local gathering place for about 170 years. 

According to its Facebook profile, the facility includes a shared kitchen, salon, and coworking lounge and is operated by Esoragoto LLC.

Its BTC Map listing states that the venue accepts both Lightning and on-chain Bitcoin payments. 

The payment information was recorded as verified on August 25th.

BTC Map is a community-maintained directory of physical businesses that accept Bitcoin. 

No details were provided about other participating businesses or a timetable for expanding the initiative across Sado Island.
