BlueWallet, a Bitcoin wallet available for both iOS and Android devices, has announced that their custodial Lightning wallet services will be discontinued by April 30th, 2023.

The company noted in a blog post that Lndhub.io, the Lightning node where BlueWallet offers Lightning wallets for its users, is sunsetting. Users will still be able to withdraw their satoshis, but will not be able to open new or refill existing Lightning wallets on the LndHub node.

BlueWallet’s post continues by urging users to withdraw funds from their BlueWallet custodial Lightning wallets as soon as possible. Also, neither the standard BlueWallet Bitcoin wallets (on-chain) nor the self-custody Lightning wallets, which allow users to connect to their own Lndhub, will be impacted by this change.

The blog explains, “today, with the availability of more mainstream services offering scalable solutions, Lndhub has fulfilled its purpose in its current form.”

Users will still have access to Lndhub as a software and self-hosted solution, and they will be able to connect to their own LndHub using BlueWallet or other software that supports the LndHub API specification.

The post concludes that “this may sound like bad news, but this essentially means BlueWallet going forward will only support self-custody solutions. This is good for Bitcoin and BlueWallet users.”
