U.S. President Donald Trump has issued a full pardon to Ross Ulbricht, the creator of the darknet marketplace Silk Road.

Ulbricht had been serving a life sentence without parole since 2015 after being convicted on charges related to the platform’s operation.

Announcing the decision on January 21st via Truth Social, Trump stated that the pardon was made in recognition of Ulbricht’s mother, Lyn Ulbricht, and the support from the Libertarian movement.

Trump described the original sentence—two life terms plus 40 years—as “ridiculous.”

Ulbricht was arrested in 2013 on charges including conspiracy to commit money laundering, computer hacking, and drug trafficking.

Silk Road, launched in 2011, was an online marketplace that used Bitcoin for pseudo-anonymous transactions.

While it played a significant role in early Bitcoin adoption, the platform became notorious for facilitating illegal trade, leading to its shutdown by federal authorities.

Trump addressed attendees at the 2024 Libertarian National Convention, stating, "if you vote for me, on day one, I will commute the sentence of Ross Ulbricht."

However, after waiting more than a day since Trump was sworn in, many took to social media to reach out to him and inquire whether he still intended to commute or pardon Ulbricht.

U.S. Senator Rand Paul sent a public appeal to Trump, highlighting sentencing disparities in the case.

Paul noted that others involved in Silk Road activities, such as high-ranking drug dealers, received significantly lighter sentences.

The move has reignited debate about Ulbricht’s role and the broader implications of the case.

Supporters argue his sentence was disproportionately harsh compared to others involved and emphasize his contributions to Bitcoin’s early development.

Critics, however, point to the illegal activities facilitated by Silk Road and the need for accountability.

The pardon has sparked mixed reactions outside of the Bitcoin and Libertarian communities, highlighting ongoing discussions about justice, technological innovation, and the societal impact of Bitcoin.
